Though not the most important player on the board, the pawn is crucial to the game. It is promoted, sacrificed, or used as a strategic obstruction. On occasion, it can become the queen, but that is very rare. The strength of the pawn is that it is expendable. A pawn can also be a person used by another for their own purposes.
